THIS MONTH'S GREEN INFORMATION FROM PAULINE AND DIANE, OUR CLIMATE AMBASSADORS. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE - Eco and Wildlife Friendly Gardening: Intensive farming practices are drastically reducing bird and insect populations but as gardeners we can help to reverse this trend. The next few green corners will look at ways we can encourage more wildlife into our gardens to increase biodiversity. 1. Construct insect houses: use anything you have to make it: -e.g. bricks for support, wood (lots), fir cones, straw, grass… This is the insect house we made with grandchildren (great fun). After three years it needed to be moved and inside the numbers and variety of insects was astonishing:-wood lice galore, centipedes, millipedes, beetles (all in the rotting wood) worms, slugs, snails & spiders and many more small fast insects! Also plenty of fungal degradation….it was so encouraging to find this huge diversity in such a small area. But surprisingly bees did not use it! They need their own specialist bee hotels……… For more info, click here. ************************************************************ SUB GROUPS We have also created a range of thriving sub groups for some of these activities which take place on a regular basis and we have created several What's App groups to keep you updated. These include our newly formed Fulshaw Flickers plus Fulshaw Food Lovers, Active, Theatre, Green Fingers, Art Appreciation and Book Club. Email [email protected] if you would like to join any of the groups. Click here to find out more about the activities of each group. MARCH MEETING
The next monthly meeting will take place on Monday 18th March and we look forward to hearing from Alice Walker, Mastermind Champion 2022. Alice, an expert quizzer from Derbyshire, became the oldest female BBC Mastermind champion when she triumphed in the show at the age of 66. She scored a perfect 14 out of 14 in her specialist subject, the Peak District, and won by six points in the grand final. Maybe you’ll be inspired to follow in her footsteps. Further information is on the Monthly Meetings page.
